Solar Activity - The Sun Today with Dr. C. Alex Young

Solar Activity Report: November 17-23, 2025 Solar activity remained at low levels throughout the reporting period, predominantly within the B-class flare range. Four high-intensity C-class flares and several weaker C-class events were observed, with the largest—a C9.9—occurring on November 19 from a region just beyond the northeast limb. No Earth-directed CMEs were detected during this interval. The latest helioseismic far-side map indicates the presence of two active regions, both with a high p

🌞 📰 Sun news for February 8, 2024: Solar edge is teeming with activity 🤔 Sun activity is moderate due to an M1.4 flare from AR3576. AR3576 continues with potential for moderate to high activity. 🤩 The solar limb (edge) is teeming with activity all around. Together the region and the solar limb are keeping up the typical profile of a solar maximum sun. Coronal loops from AR3575 are visible over the limb (edge) and a new region, potentially substantial in size, has coronal loops visible in the

🌞 📰 Sun news for April 25, 2024: Activity’s high, aurora on the way 🫣 🤩 Solar activity remains high with the release of six M flares over the past day. Flaring production is at a similar level to the day before, with 21 flares total. Most of the M flares came from the big sunspot complex (AR3638, AR3643, AR3645, AR3647, and AR3650) in the sun’s southwest. Only one M flare was produced in the northwest. 😮 😎 This region is also continuing to produce long, beautiful jets. Prominences are danc

🌞 👀 Sun activity for November 14, 2023 See a solar jet blasting sun-stuff into space 🤩 🌎 Over the past day, we saw beautiful active filaments all over the Earth-facing sun. 😱 And early this morning, we saw the solar jet extending from the sun’s outer atmosphere. This jet isn’t made of ordinary matter. It’s a collimated, beam-like ejection of what’s called plasma, a fourth state of matter consisting of elementary particles and magnetic fields from our blazingly hot star. 😎 🥳 It’s this sola

What is the connection between Solar Activity and Space Weather? It starts with a dynamic Sun changing the space around it according to its magnetic cycle. As the current solar cycle #25 approaches its maximum, we are experiencing Space Weather events more often here on Earth. 🌞 📰 Sun news July 2, 2024: Is Solar Cycle 25 peaking? 😮 It is now official that the June sunspot number reached 164.2, which places last month in second place, slightly behind May 2024, which had the highest sunspot number of Solar Cycle 25, 171.7. 🤔 The current solar cycle quickly surpassed all expectations of its size and activity level. Over the past several months, we have seen historic geomagnetic storms and intense solar activity. Unfortunately, we have to wait a few months past a peak

🌞 📰 Sun news for April 9, 2024: Sun activity picking up 👏 It appears that sun activity is starting to pick up. Today's story includes more C flares, an increase in flaring production, and a gorgeous prominence on the southeast limb. 👍 🤩 A sunspot region, AR3633, on the solar disk shows a beta-gamma magnetic complexity. Filaments rule the day on the solar disk and limb (edge). A gorgeous prominence erupting on the southeast limb indicates solar activity is on its way to the Earth-facing side

🌞 😱 Sun news for December 26, 2023: Solar Max is on its way 🤩 👏 Today’s top news: For the past 24 hours, the sun has been relatively calm. But Solar Max is on its way, now expected in 2024. Forecasters were predicting 2025 for the peak of the current 11-year sun cycle, Cycle 25. But the current cycle has already outpaced predictions, both in sunspot number and in the number of larger M and X flares. 🤔 So the past day has been C flares only. But remember the 3 M flares of the day before? And

🌞 📰 Solar superstorm is ongoing. More auroras tonight? 😱 WOW! Last night, there was an auroral explosion across the globe. The anticipated geomagnetic storm reached levels much higher than expected. But if you missed it, there’s a good chance for more tonight. 🤩 Overnight, the level of geomagnetic activity climbed to a G5 (extreme) storm. A series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) arrived a bit earlier than anticipated, reaching us late yesterday, May 10. It appears that one or more CMEs over

🌞 📰 Sun news for February 1, 2024: Prominences keep the action on the edge 😮 Solar activity is focused along the limb. Prominences dance around the sun on all edges. 🫣 Active region action, which had been focused on departing region AR3559, has shifted to the unnumbered region on the southeast and regions near the southeast limb but still on the far side. 👏 The coronal holes we have monitored are now gone, and a new hole developed in the south near the central meridian. This area may bring

🌞 Sun activity for November 15, 2023: Big Flare day 🤩 🥳 Whoa! A big increase in flaring! The sun produced 29 flares over the past 24 hours, in contrast to 19 the day before. It’s a sizable jump, especially considering that last week’s sun averaged just 5 flares a day. 😎 Elsewhere on the sun, one of the prominences (ropes of solar material and magnetic fields) that we saw yesterday on the sun’s southwest limb (edge) lifted off into space as a billion-ton blob of plasma. 🫣 This coronal mass e

🌞 📰 Sun news March 13, 2024: Dual dancing polar prominences 😮 Sun activity has dropped to low flaring levels with only Cs and Bs flares. 🤩 Simultaneous prominences on both solar poles have our attention. GOES-18 imagery shows the two solar plasma structures in their magnetic dances. 🫣 Filament fury was observed in the southwest quadrant in the vicinity with active region AR3599 as it departs. This region is today’s most flare-producing area on the solar disk. There is a good chance we will

🌞 📰 Sun news August 23: Intense activity on the sun’s far side 🤩 🫣 😮 The sun is active right now, but all is not as you might think. Observing our star with the SOHO spacecraft’s LASCO C2 and C3 coronagraphs, one can see a barrage of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) flying into space. 🤔 But if you look a little closer using extreme-ultraviolet imagery from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), we see no notable CME activity on the solar disk. Combining all this data into the ENLIL solar syste

What is the Solar Cycle and How Long Does It Last?

The Sun emitted a strong solar flare on Nov. 30, 2025, peaking at 9:49 p.m. ET. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured an image of the event, which was classified as X1.9 class: go.nasa.gov/4alXf6P Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground. However — when intense enough — they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS & communications signals travel. To see how such sp

🌞 📰Sun news 3.14.24: Filament fiesta in the southwest and Happy Pi Day! 🤔 Today sun activity is moderate with the production of an M1.0 flare. It was produced by departing active region AR3599 at 6:04 UTC on March 14. As anticipated, AR3599 departs providing flares, jets, and prominences. The whole day the southwest quadrant showed a fiesta of activity with erupting filaments and prominences as the sunspot region rotates out of view. This activity culminated with the M flare, the icing on the
