The scientific name for the Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator) has its roots in Latin—pinus (pine tree) colere (to dwell), and enucleare, meaning “to remove the kernel from.” This perfectly describes their foraging tactics. With over 99% of their diet consisting of plant material, Pine Grosbeaks feast on seeds from cones, buds at the tips of branches, and a wide variety of fruits such as crabapples. They are slow-moving and meticulous, often stripping an entire branch before moving on to the ne

Introducing Birds Canada’s 2026 Avian Ambassador: the Evening Grosbeak. Few birds in Canada spark the same excitement and anticipation as this striking finch. A bright, nomadic resident of boreal and mixed forests, Evening Grosbeaks occur across Canada, absent only from the most northern parts. These birds gather in large flocks to feast on seeds and berries for much of the year, switching to a mostly insect-based diet in summer (with a particular taste for Spruce Budworm). The first Pine Grosbeaks have arrived on the Ontario FeederWatch Cam this season! Watch two males nibble on seeds on a sunny November morning before a flock of Evening Grosbeaks take command of the platform feeder. Pine Grosbeaks live in open evergreen forests with spruce, pine, or fir across Canada, in mountainous regions in the West, and in subalpine forests in Eurasia. They breed in open spruce, fir, and pine forests, but they drop in on feeders in winter, especially in the northeastern U.S.

Watch Pine Grosbeaks take over the feeders in Manitouwadge, Ontario. When these plump finches aren't visiting the feeder, they hop among branches to nip off fresh buds and needles with their thick, conical bills. They also search the ground for fallen seeds. Male birds are reddish pink and gray. Females and immatures are grayish with tints of reddish orange or yellow on the head and rump. A few Common Redpolls and a female Evening Grosbeak also visit the feeder in this clip. Tune in LIVE at AllA

In Manitouwadge, Ontario, four male Pine Grosbeaks hunker down at the corners of the feeder platform for a seed-filled feast. According to the Finch Research Network’s Winter Finch Forecast, these boreal finches may appear farther south than usual during the 2025–26 winter, driven by poor food crops in parts of the boreal forest. Higher numbers are expected in southern Ontario, southern Quebec, and nearby U.S. states. Have you spotted a Pine Grosbeak this winter? Watch them daily, LIVE, at AllAb
