Somewhere along the way, you might have been told that porcupines can launch their quills at predators. The quills do easily detach when touched by a predator, but no, they do not shoot them from their body. A porcupine's quills typically lie flat until the animal feels threatened, then they rise to attention as a deterrent, as seen here. 😏 Bonus fact: fisher are the only known North America
