Pinching out Dahlia’s… The million dollar question it would seem. I can only share MY experience and what I will be doing this year. Truth is that it is my 11th year growing dahlias and I only knew pinching out was even a thing when I started this page. Does is give you more flowers? 10000% yes Do you get a bushier plant? ABSOLUTELY The last 2 years I had pinched my dahlia at 2 pairs of leaves. Did I get more flowers? YES But having read lots online about it there seems to be so much more inform

Pinching dahlias always scares people but it’s hard to do it wrong. Just eliminate that main stem once your plant has 3-4 sets of leaves. It’s better to do it when your plant is younger before the stem becomes hollow. Hollow stems become a catch basin for rain which encourages rot. | Local Harvest Flowers

Ever wonder why your dahlias grow tall but not bushy? Try pinching! ✂️ Pinching helps your dahlia focus its energy on growing outward instead of just upward. This makes the plant fuller, sturdier, and loaded with blooms through the season. It might feel scary to cut a healthy stem, but it works! Give your dahlias a little trim, and they’ll reward you with more blooms. 💐🌿 #DahliaCare #PinchingDahlias #GardeningTips #MoreBlooms #DahliaSeason #gardeningismytherapy #CutFlowerGarden #FlowerGardenin

✂️ Pinching our dahlias — it never gets easy, but it’s definitely worth it!When we first started pinching, it felt so wrong to cut off several inches of healthy growth. But once we saw how much fuller, stronger, and more flower-packed our pinched dahlias were compared to the unpinched ones… we were hooked. 🌸💪Pinching helps promote branching, sturdier stems, and way more blooms — not just for dahlias, but for other favorites like zinnias, cosmos, snapdragons, amaranth, basil, and even some sunf

Pinching dahlias redirects their energy from one big, thick central stem to multiple side-shoots. This will encourage your plant to produce multiple blooms all throughout the growing season. Quickly after pinching your dahlias, you’ll notice two new shoots will grow where only one was before! Pinching your dahlias makes them • bushier, • less top-heavy • less prone to wind damage, • PLUS the stems will be a more manageable size when you cut and arrange your first dahlias blooms. Pinching your dahlias makes them •bushier, •less top-heavy •less prone to wind damage, •PLUS the stems will be a more manageable size when you cut and arrange your first dahlias blooms. One of the biggest benefits of growing dahlias is their “cut & come again” trait, but this quality really only exhibits when young plants are properly pinched and flowers are cut deep into the plant to encourage continued new growth. It really is true, the more you ✂️ cut, the more blooms you get with dahlias! 👉

Dahlias are at their dazzling best right now, strutting their stuff in full bloom. Here are a few tips to keep them flowering their socks off! • Regularly deadhead and cut for the vase to encourage an almost endless flush of flowers • Remove foliage from the base of the stems for better air circulation and to help prevent diseases • Stake plants to keep them upright and to protect them from blustery late summer winds A little care now will keep your dahlias shining bright and bringing joy to you

Dahlias really are some of the best value plants you can grow. Not only will they repeat flower all season with regular cutting, they’re also easy to divide to instantly double your dahlia crop. Now is the perfect time to split larger overwintered tubers into 2, 3 or even 4 sections, each with its own ‘eye’, ahead of planting into pots. Look what happens when we pinch our dahlias! 👀 We pinch our dahlias when plants are about 8”-12” tall, redirecting their energy from one big, thick central stem to multiple side-shoots. Do this for MORE flowers… Here is a compilation of old clips of my dahlia pinching over the years! I have actually done it differently this year (which I have shown on stories as I did it) This year I have actually pinched them as soon as I see the stem appear above the leaves, I haven’t needed scissors because it was the tiniest bit of growth . I have just been nipping them off as I saw them! Pinching promotes branching and new stems so you will get more flowers! You also could save the pinched

Ready to double your dahlia flowers? If you potted up tubers earlier in the spring, you should have a decent amount of growth by now. If so, here’s a quick hack to encourage young plants to bush out for twice as many blooms this summer and autumn. Or, if you’ve run out of time to plant tubers, why not pre-order your favourite dahlias as 3L plants despatching from late May.
