What an odd start to the season... I might have 5 dahlias up but the rest of the field is empty.. I'm definitely second guessing everything I've ever known about dahlias. Not sure what is going on or if my life's circumstances have taken too much attention to issues that may or may not be going on in the field. Maybe aliens are also coming in at night. Idk.. will I have any dahlias to showcase in a few months, who knows... I'll keep you posted. Feel free to post photos of your beautiful blooms h

A lot of you asked how I store my dahlias for winter so I thought I’d share it here for you☺️ This method has helped mine to stay firm and keeps them from shriveling or getting moldy. I do divide them into smaller clumps but not into single tubers. I’ve found they shrivel easier when they’re completely divided down to single tubers. Soil type and temperatures are the deciding factor - heavy, wet soils can cause dahlias to rot over winter, dahlias will also rot if they freeze. Often, mulching isn’t enough and it is less risky to lift, dry and store them. You can leave it until the first frost, but we always make a start in early November to clear space for planting tulips and other spring bulbs. We’re starting with the

November this year is a constant rhythm of dig, divide and store dahlias. Over and over, until our whole field is processed. Almost 400 dahlia clumps were divided yesterday, which means today they get packed away and stored and then more are divided in the afternoon. I store ones with smaller amounts in these containers, and then store the rest in crate, lined with burlap and labeled by variety. They then go into a room kept at 40-45 degrees until spring when they’re packed up. I have a longer s

Pinching your dahlias makes them •bushier, •less top-heavy •less prone to wind damage, •PLUS the stems will be a more manageable size when you cut and arrange your first dahlias blooms. One of the biggest benefits of growing dahlias is their “cut & come again” trait, but this quality really only exhibits when young plants are properly pinched and flowers are cut deep into the plant to encourage continued new growth. It really is true, the more you ✂️ cut, the more blooms you get with dahlias! 👉
