Even though spectacled bears are large carnivores, protein is thought to make up less than 5% of their total diet. That makes this recent camera trap footage incredibly rare: Denis the bear is carrying a small deer in his jaws. Our data shows that bears tend to mainly eat carrion (dead animals). Generally other animals hunt prey and then spectacled bears, being the largest predator in the dry forest, take it from them. There is a remote possibility that Denis hunted the deer, but it is more like
