What’s happening here? Smithsonian Gardens is rebuilding some of our existing soils to support new tree plantings. To rebuild the existing, heavily compacted soils, we are using the ‘scoop and dump’ method. A layer of compost is first added on top of the existing soil. Soils are then dug to a depth of 24” to loosen compaction. The soil is then dropped from about a 6’ height to create veins of compost and maintain clumps of soils within the overall mix.
