Once a single kid shows up to 5th grade without a smartphone, he or she empowers other kids to feel cool in a new way — having a rich life beyond screens. Once a single family decides they will delay smartphones until their kid is at least 14, that empowers other parents to delay as well. Social norms are held in place by participation — and any
