🐦Birds tell the story of the boreal. When forest structure changes or wetlands are disturbed, birds tend to feel it first. Declines in certain species can warn us that larger ecosystem shifts are underway. By listening to these early signals and supporting Indigenous-led conservation across the boreal, we help protect the landscapes that birds and people both rely on. Strong bird populations point to healthy, resilient forests. More at https://www.borealconservation.org/north-americas-bird-nurs

Each spring approximately 1-3 billion birds migrate to the Boreal Forest of Canada! By fall 3-6 billion are migrating back down south somewhere warm to overwinter. Some bird species have adapted to staying in or migrating to the Boreal Forest for the winter months, we call them winter residents! Winter is a great time to get into birding! You can set up bird feeders to attract them to your yard. Because there are only a few species that stay all winter, it’s a good time to start learning birds!

Right now, one of the largest migrations on earth is happening right outside your window—between 1 and 3 billion birds are flying across the continent to breed, nest and raise their young in the Boreal Forest. And if you know what to look for, you’ll see a lot more than you can imagine. Follow along with Jeff Wells from the National Audubon Society for tips on finding one of these migratory songbirds in your backyard! | Boreal Conservation

When insects attack trees in the Boreal Forest, who comes to the rescue? Birds like the Magnolia Warbler, this week’s boreal bird. The boreal provides the nesting ground for millions of birds, and in return the birds feast on summertime bugs like caterpillars and budworms that wreak havoc on trees if left unchecked. Birds need the boreal, and the boreal needs birds! More at https://www.borealconservation.org/north-americas-bird-nursery | Boreal Conservation

The Andes Mountains of Colombia might seem far away for a tiny Canada Warbler, but it’s no match for this ambitious bird! Each year, this migratory species makes the trip from its winter home in the Andes to its summer nesting grounds in the Boreal -- crossing thousands of miles, traversing oceans, and passing through many of our backyards on its journey. Just one of many migratory birds that relies on BOTH of these locations for its survival, and another reminder of why we need to collaborate o

Today is International Day for Biological Diversity–the best kind of day to celebrate the Boreal Forest. 🌲 As the largest intact forest on the planet, the boreal is home to incredible biodiversity. From the lichen that covers arctic tundra, and the moss that spreads across forest floors, to iconic species like wolves, moose, and caribou that roam through the trees, and the birds that grace the skies above – the boreal is one of the last strongholds of wild nature left on the planet. Explore "North America’s bird nursery" in the third installment of ABC's four-part series on forest biomes of the Western Hemisphere! 🪺 We’ve traced the journey of one small songbird, the Blackpoll Warbler, over thousands of miles in our previous blogs. It left its non-breeding territory in the steamy tropical forests of South America and moved north, stopping briefly in the temperate forests of the United States. Now, we will follow the Blackpoll Warbler as it heads to the final destination of

We're excited to welcome back the boreal birds from our cam site in Manitouwadge, Ontario! This northern site is an excellent location to see winter finches like redpolls and grosbeaks as well as two species of Jays and even Ruffed Grouse! The feeders sit in the middle of a large backyard with a large birch tree that the birds love, as well as a mixed stand of conifers and several fruit and berry producing shrubs. This clip highlights some favorites, including Pine Grosbeaks, Red-breasted Nuthatc

A Winter Finch Invasion? On Halloween? Feels a little eerie…...but don’t worry, it’s actually perfectly natural! In fact, this invasion of birds — also known as an irruption — is the largest to happen in more than a decade. And irruptions on this scale don’t happen just anywhere. For birds to be seen in these numbers, they need a healthy, intact forest to support them. Which is exactly what the boreal provides. So don’t be spooked — if you see an irruption of birds in the sky, think of it as a r

Today's Video of the Week features one of the most secretive North American owls, the Boreal Owl. These little raptors are rarely out in the day, making this a special observation that offers a great window into this bird's remarkable ability to hear prey moving under the snow. The owl doesn't catch its prey this time, but its close scrutiny of the ground suggests the owl knows its target is still there. Look closely towards the end of the video to see the spots in the back of the owl's head tha

You can combine the landmass of these 7 places, and they’re still SMALLER than the Boreal Forest in North America! That’s how big the largest intact forest on the planet is. Keeping it intact means protecting habitats for moose, caribou, and billions of migratory birds, plus fresh drinking water and clean air for us humans, too.
