PDA is not a behaviour problem. It’s a human experience. When we talk about Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), we tend to lean toward describing distressed behaviours. Trauma, dysregulation, destabilisation and the resulting behaviour. But for me, PDA provides me with an incredible set of strengths worthy of nurturing. We don't tend to see much shared around this due to media formats often being a space to join in our common goals; one of which is finding solutions for our childrens' distress.

✨The Paradox of PDA Parenting✨ When our children communicate their needs in ways that feel confusing or overwhelming - what are we usually told? 🔁 Be stricter 🔁 Use rewards 🔁 Add consequences 🔁 Set firmer boundaries 🔁 Follow the “positive behaviour” script to the letter But here’s the thing… 🎯 We’ve already tried those things. We’ve done the courses, used the charts, stuck to the strategies. We’ve read the manuals. Got the stickers. Earned the certificates. And still - nothing works! 🤷♀️

Everyone thinks rewards and consequences work… until they learn about Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). PDA is a profile within autism where everyday demands — even things the person wants to do — can trigger intense anxiety and a need to regain control. It’s not about defiance. It’s not about manipulation. And it’s definitely not about a lack of motivation. For someone with PDA, rewards can increase pressure, and consequences can feel like threat. Both often make things worse, not better — b

People often think PDA is defience but it rarely is, it's avoidance which is very different and they will even avoid doing things that want to do which is proof this isn't bad behaviour = it's simply needing to be in control of their autonomy. She will do the task = but in her own way and time. 🤣 #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #autismpda #understandingpda #autism | ASD with a G and T

⚠️ So first let me just say that these are based on my experience as a PDA child at school and being a parent to a child with PDA who attended school. This is not a diagnostic criteria (actually there isn't a diagnostic criteria for PDA at all!) and I do not represent everyone who has PDA 🚫 For me pathological demand avoidance (or persistent drive for autonomy) is typified by extreme levels of anxiety leading to a need for control and, of course, an aversion to anything that feels too much like

If your child avoids everyday demands, melts down over “simple” requests, or seems anxious around expectations — this may not be defiance or bad behaviour. PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is driven by anxiety and a need for control, not a lack of care or effort. The part many parents don’t hear enough: children with PDA are not broken — and things can get easier when the nervous system feels safe and understood. You’re not failing. And your child isn’t either. Call to action (choose one): 👉

Roisín | Beyond Typical Parenting on Instagram: "PDA is not bad behaviour. It’s not avoidance. It’s not refusal. It’s not defiance. It’s functional impairment caused by a nervous system disability. And behavioural approaches are NOT the answer. Stop gaslighting parents and start providing them with the support and understanding they actually need. Parenting a child with a pervasive drive for autonomy (often known as Pathological Demand Avoidance/PDA) can feel like trying to navigate a world that just doesn’t get you or your child. You might be doing everything “right” in the parenting book, yet still facing daily meltdowns over things like brushing teeth, getting dressed, or leaving the house. If you resonate with this experience, I want you to know you’re not alone. This is hard, and it’s made even harder when the usual parenting strateg

PDA is not a behaviour problem. It’s a nervous system profile. Demands, even small ones, can trigger a threat response. This looks like avoidance, refusal, anger, silliness, shutdown, or overwhelm. It’s not defiance. It’s dysregulation. When you reduce pressure and increase safety, the child’s capacity returns.
