Yesterday, licensed bander Bill Stout visited the Barred Owl nest box and banded the two little owlets. They were carefully weighed, measured, and received one silver federal ID band and one purple colored research band. The purple bands with letters "AD" and "AF" connect them to the monitoring project and, if the birds are seen and reported, we can follow their dispersal after fledging. Important wildlife monitoring projects, like Bill Stout's work, provide essential information for learning ab

Happy Talon Tuesday! Barred Owls, like Perseus, often prefer forest habitats with a water source like a marsh, stream, or swamp. While they hunt a wide range of animals, amphibians and crayfish are frequently on the menu, and they will even pounce into shallow water to catch them! Here, Perseus is utilizing her excellent sense of hearing which helps with hunting. Watch as she swivels her head and facial disc around to collect sound. This is the story of a Barred Owl that struck a window in Portland in November. Window strikes like these are all too common and occur because glass is both reflective — which tricks birds into thinking they’re flying into open sky or vegetation — and transparent — it appears invisible to a bird when lit from inside. At BirdSafe Maine, we want to raise awareness about the bird-glass collision problem and encourage adoption of available solutions. A good samaritan found the owl around 7 am and st

One bite for you, two bites for me! Barred Owls (Strix varia) are commonly seen and heard along the boardwalk, especially in the area of the Lettuce Lakes. In this amazing footage shot last week, Boardwalk Naturalist Brenda Stelzer captured some tender moments as an adult, likely the female, is tearing up a frog to feed its hungry owlet. The male typically does most of the hunting for the nest, especially during the first few weeks. Young owls usually start flying at 10-12 weeks of age. | Audubo

Visitors on our boardwalk frequently enjoy up-close and personal experiences with wildlife. Barred Owls are often seen or heard during the day and are accustomed to human activity nearby. Corkscrew member and North Naples resident Lisa Brankin was thrilled to get footage of this one, which may have been hunting for treefrogs right next to the boardwalk on a recent visit. Because sound travels extremely well in the cypress forest, we strongly encourage visitors to proceed quietly to maximize the

There’s something magical about seeing a barred owl in the rain. 🌧️🦉 Barred owls are perfectly adapted to wet forests and stormy weather. Their dense feathers shed water while still allowing them to fly silently — meaning even a rainy day doesn’t stop them from watching, listening, and hunting. Moments like this remind me how tough and beautiful these birds really are. Pretty Lady just sitting calm while the world falls around her… nature at its finest. 👉 Have you ever seen an owl in the rain
