Oct 6, 2020 · I'm working on a CGI reconstruction of a medieval castle (a somewhat "motte & bailey" type) from the mid-14th c. and I'm having difficulties on how to visualize the palisades. Several historians and curators have given their opinions about the palisades, and some say they were crenellated, others they they weren't.

Mar 30, 2021 · Wooden castles were quite common, and could be perfectly defensible. Don't think of a wooden palisade as a fence, but as a tight row of mossy logs at the top of a rampart behind a steep ditch. Just *getting* to the palisade to set it on fire will be a major accomplishment. Clay walls were also used, generally built around a wooden or wattle core.
