Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), perhaps the most famous artist in the world, is perceived by many as the 'mad' artist, the man who painted in a frenzy or simply the tormented soul who cuts off his ear. His artistic genius is often overshadowed by those who see his paintings as mere visual manifestations of his troubled mind.

On 30 March, Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Zundert, the eldest son of the Protestant clergyman Theodorus van Gogh (1822 - 1885) and Anna Cornelia Carbentus (1819-1907). 1857 Birth of his brother Theo on 1 May.

Some of Vincent van Gogh's most famous works are his Sunflower series. He painted a total of eleven of these canvases, although the most commonly referred to are the seven he painted while in Arles in 1888 - 1889.

Olive Grove, 1889 by Vincent Van Gogh The olive groves around Saint-Rémy were a rewarding subject for Van Gogh. He was fascinated by the ever-changing colour of the olive trees and tried to find a good way of painting their irregular growth.

This drawing, Winter Garden, was painted in March 1884 when Van Gogh was staying in Nuenen with his parents.It shows Van Gogh's strong emotion and fascination with the landscape. In one of his letters to Theo, he wrote about the garden, "the garden sets me dreaming."

At Eternity's Gate is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh that he made in 1890 in Saint-Remy de Provence based on an early lithograph. The painting was completed in early May at a time when he was convalescing from a severe relapse in his health and some two months before his death, generally accepted as a suicide.
