Arkansas State University developed from an agricultural school founded on April 1, 1909 by Act 100 of the 37th Arkansas General Assembly. It was created as one of four Arkansas high schools to teach agriculture, horticulture and the art of textile manufacturing.

Although the names and imagery regarding "Indians" will be officially retired, ASU’s team names for the school’s 16 NCAA Division I sports will remain "Indians" until the conclusion of the current school year.

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Mascot Review Committee recommends to the Chancellor of Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, that this University officially retire the name “Indians” and Indian Family – together with all Native American imagery connected to the intercollegiate athletic program.

Mar 13, 2008 · Today at 11 a.m. on the east side of the Student Union, a roll-out ceremony for Arkansas State University’s newly adopted mascot, the Red Wolves, revealed the new face of ASU athletics. The decision to bid farewell to ASU’s Indians and Indian Family was not an easy one, but it was a collaborative decision at every level.

In commemoration of our first 100 years, ASU published a Centennial book titled Embrace the Past 1909-2009: Celebrating Our First Century, Arkansas State University. It consists of 100 stories or memories from people who have been part of the university family.
