These days, it’s not a good time to be a public building past prime in downtown Terre Haute, with several demolition projects now begun or soon to begin. Work began Wednesday morning to raze the old Vigo County Jail (technically the old Vigo County Security Center) with Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer opening the proceedings by manning an excavator to swing its bucket into the building.

The former Vigo County Jail has been in the works to be demolished for quite some time, and now the demolition is officially set to begin this week. The colder weather in the Wabash Valley has led to delays in the project,

Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer kicked off the jail demolition. The demolition will take place over the next 60 to 90 days. Once it's completed, the area will become a green space and add more parking for the courthouse.

A press release has indicated issues with the 911 lines in Vigo County. According to the release, 911 and admin lines are currently down in Vigo County. No reason was given in the release as to the cause of the issue.
