Providence mayor: ‘Hero’ tipster that led officials to Brown shooting suspect should get full $50K
Brett Smiley, the Democratic mayor of Providence, R.I., is asking the FBI to issue a reward to the anonymous Reddit user whose tip led to the suspect in last week’s Brown University
The tipster, known as "John" in the mayor's letter, reached out to authorities with information that cracked open the case.
The FBI offered a reward of $50,000 for information that led to the identification and capture of the shooter.
Investigators are asking for the public's help to identify the individual, "who was in proximity of the person of interest," according to a press release sent out at 12:41 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec 17. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Providence Police Department's tip line at 401-272-3121.
In the days that followed a shooting at Brown University with no named suspect in custody, two dead, and nine injured, the smallest state made international news, putting Mayor Brett Smiley and other local and state officials in the spotlight.
Investigators searching the Salem, New Hampshire, storage facility where Brown University shooter Claudio Manuel Neves Valente was found dead Thursday, Dec. 18, have recovered two 9mm pistols, more than 200 rounds of ammunition, several high-capacity magazines, body armor, several IDs, phones and thumb drives.
The way they backtracked, covered every single thing, when I tell you meticulous – wow. And the collaboration – so many agencies. My God,” said Ken Dulgarian.
