Occupants of some buildings near the scene of a shooting in midtown Manhattan are being allowed to leave following lockdowns. NBC News' Steven Romo reports a sense of relief spread through crowds gathered near the shooting scene after police announced the gunman is deceased.
The response came after a "shots fired call" just before 6:30 p.m. local time Monday, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner Public Information (DCPI) told Newsweek by phone. Police did confirm the police activity was near Park Avenue and East 52nd Street in New York.
Nekeisha Lewis, who witnessed the shooting in a Park Avenue building, described the scene as a “war zone.” NBC News’ Steven Romo spoke to Lewis about what she saw.
