Helene has torn through the Southeast, killing at least four dozen people, in what a North Carolina county officialcalled the "most significant naturaldisaster" the region has experienced in recent years.

In Western North Carolina, heavy rains are causing rivers and lakes to overflow, and landslides have blocked major roads. Across the state, two deaths have been linked to the storm.

Panicked local officials initially said the Waterville Dam and the Lake Lure Dam had burst, but both were reportedly still holding as of Friday afternoon
