The Sydney Marathon has joined the ranks of New York, Boston, Chicago, London, Berlin and Tokyo, receiving a designation reserved for the most elite races in the world.

The Olympics, held every four years, and the world championships, held every two years, are also considered majors.The next Sydney Marathon is on Aug. 31, 2025, taking place two weeks before the men's and women's marathons at the world championships in Tokyo.

The World Marathon Major Series aims to expand its lineup by adding two new races, bringing the total to nine. Sydney will proudly take its place as the seventh marathon in this elite series.
