The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has temporarily blocked a federal judge’s order that directed President Donald Trump to return control of National Guard troops to California after he deployed them there following protests in Los Angeles over immigration raids.

A federal judge has ruled that President Trump’s call-up of the California National Guard was illegal, prompting an immediate appeal from the Trump administration. The troops will remain in place for at least a few days after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals granted an administrative stay of the judges ruling.

A federal judge ruled Thursday evening that President Donald Trump’s federalization of the California National Guard in response to anti-immigration-enforcement protests in Los Angeles was “illegal.” Pending an immediate appeal by the Trump Administration,
