More than 41 million Americans across California, Nevada and Arizona are under flood watches on Wednesday amid a rare, high risk for excessive rainfall and flooding.

A major storm is lashing California with powerful winds and is set to deliver months’ worth of rain that could trigger debris flows and flash floods.

At least one person has died in Redding, California, because of the torrential rain and significant flooding as the state braces for worsening conditions this week. Redding Mayor Mike Littau confirmed the death in a Facebook update Sunday night.
