All but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board Air India Flight AI171 died after the Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday, making 2025 one of the deadliest years in the past decade for civil aviation.

Fatal crash raises new concerns for both firms as they try to revamp after years of problems that marred reputations.

Air India has confirmed there was only one survivor from today’s plane crash in Ahmedabad. An airline spokesman said that “of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital”.
