The family holiday was less organized and stranger in reality, O'Keefe said, often occurring on random days and featuring practices without a clear purpose, like keeping a clock in a bag.

Seinfeld writer Dan O’Keefe was inspired by one of his family’s holiday traditions to create Festivus. He said his father Daniel O’Keefe started a version of the holiday in 1966.
