Arizonans are preparing to vote on a state constitutional amendment to allow abortion up to the point of fetal viability.

This November, Arizonans will have the opportunity to vote on whether to enact a state constitutional amendment that would create a fundamental right to abortion. Activists in favor of the amendment claim that “voters clamored to sign” a petition to put the amendment on the ballot.

Asked why supporters would not participate, an Arizona for Abortion Access spokesperson cited other campaign work and support for the amendment.

In 2022 and 2023, voters in six more states protected abortion rights with ballot initiatives. Kentucky and Montana voters rejected abortion bans, while California, Michigan, Ohio and Vermont voted to codify abortion rights in their state constitutions, all through ballot measures.

Trump campaign political director James Blair told The Post it’s possible those ballot measures “are favorable to Republicans” because voters can use the ballot measure to back abortion rights and then base their decision for president on other factors, in line with Trump’s public claims that he wants to leave abortion up to the states.

Abortion rights groups have outraised opponents by a nearly 8-to-1 margin in campaigns for ballot measures across the U.S. this year.

But 10 years later — as she and other Arizona residents braced for a possible ban on nearly all abortions — Chavez drove over 300 miles (480 kilometers) to California to help a friend get one. That experience with someone she knew who was struggling financially and couldn't support another child was the final push that changed Chavez’s stance on the issue.
