Chicago Cubs icon Ryne Sandberg has died after a battle with cancer, the team announced.

Ryne Sandberg, a Hall of Fame second baseman who became one of baseball’s best all-around players while starring for the Chicago Cubs, has died.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.

"Jed and his baseball operations staff have built a healthy player development organization and put an exciting, playoff contending team on the field," he said.
