Nearly a month after wildfires blazed on the Portuguese island of Madeira, more fires have broken out in mainland Portugal . Seven people have reportedly died so far in the fires, which are spreading between the northern district of Aveiro and Porto .

Fire services in the town of Arouca, near Porto, described the situation as “uncontrollable” as they fought three separate blazes. Margarida Belém, president of the local chamber, said that 15 villages in the area were isolated because of the fires.

At least seven people have died after wildfires in the Aveiro and Viseu areas of Portugal, although cooler weather has helped tackle the flames. Dozens of homes have been destroyed and tens of thousands of hectares of forest and scrubland have been lost to the flames.
