NASA JPL Developing Underwater Robots to Venture Deep Below Polar Ice. 5d. Called IceNode, the project envisions a fleet of autonomous robots that would help determine the melt rate of ice shelves.

“These robots are a platform to bring science instruments to the hardest-to-reach locations on Earth,” said Paul Glick, JPL robotics mechanical engineer and IceNode principal investigator.

The eventual plan is to use the snake robot, Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor (EELS), to explore oceans beneath the moon’s crust and finally answer one of the universe’s big, open questions.
