Israel's military launched a new ground offensive in Gaza, sending troops into areas they retreated from during a two-month ceasefire. This comes a day after airstrikes killed more than 400 people.

TEL AVIV — Israel’s military has sent ground troops back into the Gaza Strip, the spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Forces announced, just over a day after it broke a two-month long ceasefire with a sprawling bombing campaign that killed hundreds across the enclave.

Israel said it sent ground troops back into the center and south of the Gaza Strip, expanding a military operation that began with airstrikes a day earlier that Palestinian authorities said killed hundreds of people.

Israeli strikes overnight killed at least 85 Palestinians across Gaza, hitting multiple homes and killing men, women and children as they slept. Gaza's Health Ministry reported the toll from the strikes overnight into Thursday.
