The Hawaii to Florida redeye for TGL's debut is a chore, but one two-time major winner is a believer in the new format.
Matsuyama set the PGA Tour scoring record, posting a 35-under score to win The Sentry at Kapalua. He faced an 8-footer for birdie on the 18th green to make history, and the 2021 Masters Champion drained it to etch his name into the record books.
The Olympic bronze medalist also improves his record as a 36-hole leader. Commanding the seventh lead of his career at the halfway point, Matsuyama converted his advantage into his fourth victory while in that position. It is his second straight conversion with his last coming at what was his most recent victory, the 2024 St. Jude Championship.
The first full-field event begins this week on the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup schedule at the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Morikawa was in a familiar situation at the season-opening Sentry this past weekend. He entered the final round one stroke behind leader Hideki Matsuyama at Kapalua and, once again, failed to convert the opportunity into a win. Morikawa missed three of the first four greens in his final round, more than he missed in the first three combined rounds.
Hideki Matsuyama set a new PGA Tour record with his total of 35 under par over 72 holes at The Sentry on Sunday, beating Collin Morikawa by three shots.
Morikawa, who also finished runner-up at Kapalua in 2023, could think of only one NSFW way to describe Matsuyama's performance.
