National Guard troops are arriving in Washington after President Donald Trump announced on Monday that 800 National Guard troops would be deployed as he declared a public safety emergency -- despite the city’s mayor noting violent crime is at a 30-year low.

The Washington Post backed Trump's law-and-order approach in D.C. while also calling for long-term fixes including more police officers and juvenile justice reforms on Monday.

National Guard troops began arriving in Washington on Tuesday morning, a day after President Trump deployed some 800 members to the nation’s capital to combat what he called out-of-control violent crime.
