The Fridays for Future protest called for a focus on ending production of oil, gas and coal at the annual gathering that coincides with the U.N. General Assembly session.

The planned actions in Berlin, Brussels, Rio de Janeiro, New Delhi and elsewhere were being organized by the youth-led group Fridays for Future.

New York is hosting Climate Week NYC, an annual event that promotes climate action, at the same time the UN General Assembly takes up the issue on several fronts.

“The time is now to take on these big challenges,” said Gabe Kleinman, a spokesperson for Climate Science Fair, a four-day event on the High Line that coincides with the festival. “That means big solutions deployed right now with a sense of urgency.”
