The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife announced Wednesday it is closing the Kahauale’a Natural Area Reserve in Puna for 90 days due to the eruptive activity at Kilauea. The closure, effective immediately, may be extended if hazardous conditions continue.

According to an HVO report, a pair of fissures formed west of Napau Crater on Kilauea’s middle East Rift Zone likely between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. From each fissure, lava flowed for about 50 meters before the eruption ceased.

Kilauea’s eruption at the remote Napau Crater continues this morning, with lava still confined to the crater floor. According to a Hawaiian Volcano Observatory update, the volcanic vent that opened Tuesday morning within the crater is still emitting lava, which has now covered about 30% of the crater floor.

On Sunday, the Kilauea volcano inside of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park began to erupt before pausing and starting again on Monday night.

Geologists collected fresh lava samples from the Napau crater of the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island on Tuesday, September 17, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).Footage by the USGS shows geologists using a shovel to scoop up the molten sample and then cooling it by placing it in a bucket and dousing it with water.
