California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that he will deploy the National Guard to support food banks amidst an ongoing government shutdown now in its fourth week. California will also be fast-tracking $80 million in state funds in response to funding delays triggered by the government shutdown.

U.S. states this week warned food aid recipients that their benefits may not be distributed in November if the federal government shutdown stretches into its fourth week.

The USDA said the shutdown could mean “insufficient funds to pay the entirety of November SNAP benefits to 42 million people across the country.”
