President Donald Trump told Senate Republicans he is open to a state and local tax deduction cap lower than the $40,000 in the House-passed version of his giant tax bill, a person familiar with the matter said.

In a closed-door discussion with GOP senators, the president indicated that Senate Republicans could raise the cap from the current limit of $10,000 but not as high as the House bill, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to reflect private conversations.

The tax deduction was crucial to getting the bill through the House. Senate action would set up a showdown with blue state Republicans.
