The new year arrived not only with fireworks, but with displays of aurora across the world at much more southerly latitudes than is normal.

Parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire saw a spectacular display of the Northern Lights on the first day of the new year. Splashes of red, green and purple in the skies were captured on camera. The display was particularly vivid along the coast.

New Year’s Eve will be the final chance for Oregonians to see the northern lights in their state in 2024. While Monday night the view line to see the lights extended into the state, on Tuesday night the line will just skim Oregon’s borders with Washington and Idaho.
