WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said he looked forward to meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney but reiterated that he did not think the U.S. needed Canada's cars, energy or lumber and questioned what he called Canadian reliance on the U.S.

But the president continued pushing his profound misunderstanding of how international trade works in his continued defense of high tariffs.

Pres. Trump and newly elected Canadian PM Mark Carney, who won office by campaigning against Trump's tariffs, met for the first time in the Oval Office amid growing tensions between the two countries.
