The Supreme Court went out of its way to note in an unrelated ruling Thursday that President Donald Trump cannot legally remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. In a decision that did allow Trump to fire two members of independent federal labor boards, the high court said that the Federal Reserve, on the other hand, holds a different status.

The court’s action essentially extended an order Chief Justice John Roberts issued in April that had the effect of removing two board members who Trump fired from agencies that deal with labor issues, including one with a key role for federal workers as Trump aims to drastically downsize the workforce.
