Citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, DOT shared that in 2022 “there were 498 fatal traffic crashes and an estimated 32,213 injury crashes that occurred when there was snow and/or sleet conditions at the time of the crash. CTDOT emphasizes that preparation is essential for safe winter driving.”

Snow is falling at more than two inches per hour Friday night, and parts of the state could see 12 inches. Anyone who must travel should do so cautiously.

The first half of Friday will be quiet and chilly, with temperatures in the teens to start the day. Clouds will thicken during the day with high temperatures reaching only to the mid to upper 20s across the state. Snow chances will increase during the afternoon as the storm approaches from the northwest.

All of Connecticut is under a winter weather alert through the rest of Friday and into Saturday morning. The heaviest snow will fall this evening as some areas could see snowfall rates of an inch or greater per hour at times tonight.

Many cities and downs are enforcing parking bans to give snowplows space to clear the streets. People are asked to stay off the roads if at all possible.
