Tuesday, 9 a.m. Hurricane Melissa’s eye is expected to reach Jamaica in the “next few hours,” the National Hurricane Center said in an update, warning residents to remain sheltered while the storm passes. Melissa is now sustaining wind speeds of up to 180 miles per hour, forecasters said.
Hurricane Melissa is set to bring catastrophic winds, flooding and storm surge to Jamaica, forecasters have warned.
Celebrity Beyond’s Oct. 26 itinerary will visit the Western Caribbean rather than the Eastern Caribbean, according to the cruise line’s parent company, Royal Caribbean Group. The ship will visit Costa Maya in Mexico, Belize and Roatan, Honduras.
Melissa is expected to reach Jamaica early Tuesday, breaking records as the most powerful storm ever to hit the island. The most powerful before now was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which recorded winds of 130mph.
Rainfall. Melissa is expected to bring an additional 4 to 8 inches across Jamaica, where storm total amounts will be between 12 to 24 inches. Isolated areas near 30 inches will be possible over mountainous terrain. Ongoing catastrophic flash flooding and numerous landslides will continue through Tuesday night.
As Melissa hit Jamaica with a sustained speed of 185 mph near New Hope, landslides, uprooting of trees and several power outages were reported across the island.
A cold front is expected to push through the area mid-week, bringing pleasant temperatures and zero rain chances for those planning to trick-or-treat.
