Japan deploys 1,400 firefighters as northern wildfires spread
Wildfires tearing through the mountains and forests of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan have burned for five straight days, prompting authorities to deploy roughly 1,400 firefighters and military personnel in one of the country’s largest wildfire mobilizations in recent years.
Some 730 hectares (1,804 acres) were ablaze, despite efforts by the Self-Defence Forces and firefighters to bring the flames under control.
At least 90 homes have been burned in Georgia and major roads were closed as firefighters work to contain wildfires.
Firefighters are tackling a wildfire on the Mourne Mountains in County Down. The blaze broke out on the Slievenaman Road in Newcastle. It comes as a yellow warning for wildfires remains in place across Northern Ireland. People are being asked to avoid the area.
