Ingram backed up Calvin Pickard in a 5-2 loss at the Minnesota Wild on Saturday and got the call in the second game of a back-to-back, making his first NHL start since a 21-save performance for Utah in a 5-3 loss at the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 22. He entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program for a second time just 15 days later.
Sunday night was exactly what it needed to be for Ingram's return. The Oilers scored early. They gave him support. They made his job easier by controlling the game before Vegas could establish any rhythm. The third period got scary, and they'll need to address why, but Ingram got his first NHL win since returning from the Player Assistance Program.
Ingram, the first goalie to ever play for Utah’s NHL franchise, had a hard season last year — both on and off the ice. He took a break from hockey when the health of his mother, Joni, declined. He returned some time after her passing, but his game wasn’t the same.
